Revisiting Mathematics Education: China Lectures

Hans Freudenthal died on October 13, 1990 and this book represents his last major contribution to the field of mathematics education. In it Freudenthal revisits and reanalyses some of his earlier ideas, with the aim of comprehensiveness being achieved, as he says, `not by compiling, but selecting and streamlining, by including essentials and by eliminating contradictions.' This book is therefore the definitive Freudenthal.
The three parts of the work cover the three foci of Freudenthal's academic interests. `Mathematics phenomenologically' describes and analyses the mathematical context within which the `Didactical principles' of the second part are systematically developed. Finally, and now equipped with a well-shaped language and constructs, the reader is guided through `The landscape of mathematics education'.
As well as giving mathematics teachers a broader perspective to their thinking, this fascinating book will be essential reading for teacher educators, curriculum and textbook developers, and researchers involved in mathematics education anywhere.
