Creating Cohousing

This husband and wife team is credited with bringing the cohousing concept to the US, with their book Cohousing: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves , first published in 1988, with a second edition published in 1994. Updated and fully revised from the 2nd edition, with over 200 graphics, photos and plans. This version describes the experience of creating and living in cohousing communities. Over 100 cohousing communities have been built in North America following the two decades since their first book came out; 50 of them built by the authors' firm. Authors have won dozens of awards, including the Best of 50+ Housing Award from the National Association of Homebuilders and the 2009 Award of Merit from AIA for affordable senior housing in Boulder, CO. Examples of cohousing include urban, suburban and rural communities, intergenerational and senior communities, and small retrofitted communities. The audience for this book will be architects, planners, and developers, as well as existing cohousers and those who are beginning the cohousing planning process. There is a huge cohousing community to tap into for publicity, including an international audience in Australia, England, Northern Europe, Japan and Korea.
