My family escaped to Italy, and then America, in 1980. I remember thinking the whole airport was a city when I landed in New York. #3 I was six years old when my family arrived in America. I was never good at school, and I would often runaway to the apartment where my family was staying. I would escape from school and run toward the apartment, where my mom would drag me back. #4 I had a difficult time adjusting to school in America. I was constantly bullied and had bad grades, but the teachers just passed me along to the next grade. I eventually went to the Marine Corps recruiter’s office in Anaheim, California, and was told I had flat feet.
