Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The rise of global capitalism and its associated ideologies, including neoliberalism, has created a culture of individualism that is difficult to resist. It is important to resist the depiction of history as the work of heroic individuals in order for people today to recognize their potential agency as a part of an ever-expanding community of struggle. #2 The Black Power movement was a response to the limitations of the civil rights movement. It was a demand for substantive rights, and it challenged the very structure of society. #3 However, I do believe that Obama’s presidency was significant, especially because most people didn’t initially believe that a Black person could be elected president. #4 Black feminism emerged as a theoretical and practical effort demonstrating that race, gender, and class are inseparable in the social worlds we inhabit. It is still a challenge for us to understand the complex ways race, class, gender, sexuality, nation, and ability are intertwined, but we must also recognize the connections between seemingly separate ideas and processes.
