It is important to resist the depiction of history as the work of heroic individuals in order for people today to recognize their potential agency as a part of an ever-expanding community of struggle. #2 The Black Power movement was a response to the limitations of the civil rights movement. It was a demand for substantive rights, and it challenged the very structure of society. #3 However, I do believe that Obama’s presidency was significant, especially because most people didn’t initially believe that a Black person could be elected president. #4 Black feminism emerged as a theoretical and practical effort demonstrating that race, gender, and class are inseparable in the social worlds we inhabit. It is still a challenge for us to understand the complex ways race, class, gender, sexuality, nation, and ability are intertwined, but we must also recognize the connections between seemingly separate ideas and processes.
