September 18, 2018, Toronto – In her first picture book, Black Women Who Dared, Toronto artist Naomi M. Moyer presents the inspirational stories of ten Black women and women’s collectives from Canadian and American history. Included are leaders and groundbreakers who were anti-slavery activists, business women, health-care activists, civic organizers and educators. The book celebrates these remarkable women and brings their stories to a young audience, many of whom will be hearing about them for the first time.
Naomi Moyer wanted to bring attention to women and women's collectives who achieved remarkable things but who have gone largely unnoticed by the mainstream. The book features Black support networks The Coloured Women's Club, The Hour a Day Study Club, and the Black Cross Nurses; musical legend Jackie Shane; business woman Rosa Pryor; Chloe Cooley who bravely defied enslavement; and activists Sylvia Estes Stark, Sherona Hall, Blockorama, and Mary Miles Bibb.
The book received a Kirkus starred review :
"This strikingly illustrated collective biography captures some of the incredible life stories of unsung Canadian heroes who broke racial, social, political, and other boundaries to make life better for other Black Canadians." -Kirkus, 07/16/2018
