LIVED EXPERIENCE: Leonarda wrote this story based on her experiences growing up in Toronto, Canada with her grandmother, an immigrant from Central America with Black and Indigenous ancestry. TIMELY AND IMPORTANT THEMES: It was important for the author to capture moments of everyday racism that children and their caregivers often encounter. Leonarda has done work with InkWell Workshops, which offers creative writing workshops for people with lived experience of mental illness.
